Media Imperialism

Imperialism is an offshoot of the activities of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) which was part of the Havana Declaration of 1979 after the NAM itself was founded in Belgrade eighteen years earlier. The struggle against imperialism was to battle the extending authority, economic and political dominance of the powerful nations over the developing countries which were then mostly considered as Third World nations. The issue of imperialism may not be as popular as designer silver rings are among women and fashion buffs, but it’s been a debate both in the academic and political world. Media imperialism refers to imbalance and colonization of information, news and cultural flows by the Western nations. Academically and politically, the United States has been the country at the receiving end of criticisms.

This brought about a call for New World Information and Communication Order (NWICO) because countries saw media imperialism as a new form of colonialism. International deliberations lasted for years about US media imperialism and questions concerning the inequality in global information flow. NWICO supporters wanted a policy reform that will alienate this imbalance. The issue of media imperialism came with the realization that the developed nations have found a way to alter the flow of global news by imposing their views on any matter over weaker nations. This form of imperialism has so much been perfected that many people believe that the opinions flowing from the news agencies of countries such as the United States are the most balanced. Academically and politically it is widely known that such information flow represents mostly the interests of the country of origin. Media imperialism remains an on-going debate; it has not ceased to exist.
